Recent Ph.D. award in Applied Linguistics. My research topic was pragmatic development in foreign language learning. I investigated how learners could learn and improve their sense of politeness, such as making a request appropriately in a given context. Learning a language requires learning the culture where the language is spoken. Considering how people in Japan generally attach importance to being polite or formal in public, it is important for the learners of Japanese to understand such culture as well. My first experience of teaching Japanese was at a language school in Kanazawa, Japan but in recent years I have tutored students for GCSE and A'level from my home near Sevenoaks. Since Covid, most of my teaching takes place online and I now mainly teach adults. I have ten years experience of living in Japan and aim to inspire my students with a love of the country and its culture as well as improving their language skills.

I have been teaching GCSE/A-level at public schools/grammar schools since 2002. I also taught adults at Brasshouse Language Centre for several years. Taught Japanese literature and language as a mother tongue for Japanese students for a decade. I have started teaching Classical Japanese to UK university students and enjoy it.
